The Julian Pleasants Visiting Scholar Award
Derrick E. White is the first recipient of the 2009 Julian Pleasants Visiting Scholar Award and will receive $1,000 to travel to UF to conduct research using SPOHP’s resources or Special Collections at the George A. Smathers Libraries. Dr. White is an assistant professor of history at Florida Atlantic University. He will be conducting research on the desegregation of the UF football program.
This grant has been created in honor of
Dr. Julian Pleasants in
recognition of his contributions during his tenure as director of
the Samuel Proctor Oral History Program at the University of
Florida. Dr. Pleasants, author of Hanging Chads (2003), Orange
Journalism (2004), and Gator Tales (2006), established an
exemplary record in teaching, scholarship, and service to UF and
the community and continues to be an avid supporter of the Oral
History Program. Applicants for this grant should be actively
engaged in research on Florida or elsewhere in the South. They must
demonstrate a need for on-campus access to the resources of the
Oral History Program and/or Special
Collections. The Samuel
Proctor Oral History Program will award one visiting scholar grant
annually. Faculty, graduate students and independent scholars may apply.
The award competition is open to scholars in the United States.
