History
of Science Majors / Catalog
year SP 06 and earlier
For students enrolling as of Summer
B, 2006, the history major requires students to complete 35 hours
of history courses within the total of 120 hours for a bachelor's degree
from the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.
Of the 35 total hours, at least 26 must be
at the 3000 or 4000 level.
At least 21 hours of history courses must be
taken at the University of Florida, even if a student is transferring credit
for history courses from another college or university.
Students are required to take courses in a
range of geographic areas, including:
- 6 hours in American history (AMH)
- 6 hours in European history (EUH)
- 6 hours in African (AFH), Asian (ASH), or Latin
American (LAH) history (students may take two courses in the same region
or in different regions).
Students are also required to take:
- the History Practicum (HIS 3942 2.o credits)
- a History Research Seminar (AMH/AFH/ASH/LAH/EUH 4930)
NOTE 1: students must register for their
seminar in the Department office (025 Keene-Flint Hall).
NOTE 2: only with the permission of the
Undergraduate Coordinator or the Associate Chair will students be given
more than one opportunity to take a seminar.
Only classes for which a student has earned
a C or better will count toward the major (courses taken under the S/U
option are therefore unacceptable).
Courses in the History Department have the
following prefixes: AFH, AMH, ASH, EUH, HIS, LAH, and WOH. Only these courses
may be counted toward the major. Courses used to meet the requirements of
another major or minor and courses in other departments such as Art History
and Classics may not be used toward the major.
The History of Science Major
The History of Science major differs slightly
from the general history major. Students who wish to concentrate in the history
of science, technology and medicine should contact a faculty member in the
field or discuss requirements with an adviser in that concentration. Please
use the following checklist to
track your progress.
Students must meet the following requirements:
- 35 hours minimum in history,
26 at the 3000-4000 level, including History Practicum and History of Science
Research Seminar.
- 18 hours in history of science, technology and medicine,
including at least three hours in history of technology or history of medicine. These
courses also meet the history of science requirement: AST 3043 (History
of Astronomy), BSC 3402 (Theory and Practice in the Biological Sciences
), LIT 4431 (Literature of Science), PSY 4604 (History of Systems
of Psychology) and MHF 4404 (History of Mathematics).
- 9 hours in history courses at the 3000-4000 level outside
the history of science. Select from courses with the following prefix:
AMH, EUH, LAH, AFH, ASH and/or WOH.
- 9 hours of science or mathematics that are listed
as requirements for majors in that discipline.

Liberal Arts and Sciences.
Of the 36 total hours, at least 27 must be

or in different regions).
Upper-division students are required to take
one seminar, a research-oriented class limited to twenty students, on a topic
close to the research expertise of the professor concerned. The seminar may
have any history prefix but always carries the suffix 4930, e.g. AMH 4930
or AFH 4930. Students are advised to take the course as soon as they achieve
junior status (3LS), but in some cases may wait until their senior year to
take the seminar.
