The Latin American History doctoral program, which dates from the 1950s, has long been among the most distinguished in the nation. Strengthened by the University of Florida’s long-standing commitment to Latin American Studies, the program’s alumni have been recruited across the United States and in Latin America and the Caribbean. The program’s faculty maintains a high profile as publishing scholars and offers broad training in the region as a whole, as well as subfield specializations in Andean, Brazilian, Caribbean, and Mexican history. The faculty represents a range of methodological and theoretical approaches to the field, including cultural, intellectual, political, urban and social history. Intensive study in Latin American history at the University of Florida is complemented by departmental strengths in the history of Spain, Spanish Empire, and the North American borderlands. The program is supported by the UF library’s Latin American Collection that is one of the nation’s ten best, preeminent in its Caribbean holdings, with unusual strength in the Andes, Brazil, and colonial Mexico, and by the University’s distinguished Center for Latin American Studies, which is the oldest in the nation.
