Significant Dates 2009-10

This is a partial list of important departmental dates.  Other dates appear in the Graduate Student Handbook (the pocket calendar you will be given). 


Fall Semester 2009

August 6, 10, 13 AMH Preliminary Written Examinations
August 17-18

University New Student Orientation

August 17-21 New Students meet with their major advisors
August 20-21 Departmental orientation
August 21 Registration.  History graduate students must obtain advisors’ signatures on registration forms for submission to Graduate Program Assistant.
August 21 Last day of regular registration period. Students must be registered by this day or they will be charged a late registration fee.
August 24 Classes begin
August 24 – Sept 4 Every entering graduate student must submit a Plan of Study.
August 21, 5:00-7:00 History Department Opening Reception
August 28 Drop/Add Ends
September 7 Labor Day.  No Classes.
September 4, 3:30 Fee payments due to Financial Services by no later than 3:30pm
September 13 HGS Picnic at Lake Wauburg
September Each graduate student must make an appointment to discuss current status and plans with Graduate Coordinator.
Sept 21-October 12 Doctoral Qualifying Examinations (written components).
October 16-17 Homecoming.  No Classes.
November 11 Veterans’ Day.  No Classes.
November 26-27 Thanksgiving.  No Classes.
December 9 Last day of classes

 

Spring Semester 2010

January
  • Advisors meet with students, write annual reports on their students to the Graduate Committee.
  • Students submit financial-aid applications.
  • New students, in consultation with their advisors and the Graduate Coordinator, should begin planning their supervisory committees. 
January 4 Registration.  History graduate students must obtain advisors’ signatures on registration forms for submission.  (Most will have done this long in advance.) This is the only day of regular registration. Students must be registered by this day or they will be charged a $100 late registration fee.
January 5 Classes begin
January 5 – 15 Each graduate student must submit a Plan of Study or annual update.
January 11 Drop-Add Ends at midnight
January 15 Fee payments due to Financial Services by no later than 3:30pm.
January 18 Martin Luther King Jr. Day. No Classes.
February 1 All advisors’ reports on their students are due to the Graduate Committee.
March 6-13 Spring Break.  No Classes.
March 15-April 5 Doctoral Qualifying Examination (written components)
April 21 Last day of classes
April 29-30, May 1-2 Commencement
