• The Chair has responsibility for running the entire department. Numerous
tasks are delegated to individuals or committees, but technically nearly
all of those roles are advisory.
• The Associate Chair schedules courses and hires the adjunct faculty
and graduate students who are needed to fill out course offerings each term.
Needless to say, the Associate Chair and the Graduate Coordinator work closely
on various matters.
• The Graduate Coordinator oversees the education of current graduate
students and the admissions of prospective ones. The Graduate Coordinator
works closely with a Graduate Committee. Graduate students should be in regular
contact with the Graduate Coordinator, both about their routine plans and
about any unusual circumstances that may arise.
• The Undergraduate Coordinator monitors the course offerings at the
undergraduate level as well as the flow of undergraduate majors into and
through the program.
• The Policy and Personnel Committee (The P & P) is composed of
the four members of the Executive Committee supplemented by three appointed
and two elected faculty members. This Committee assists the chair in various
departmental business and is also the forum for the initial consideration
of many matters relating to policies, reforms, and initiatives.

• The Office Manager has substantial responsibilities for working with
the Chair on budgetary and financial issues. She also supervises all the
office staff.
• The Undergraduate Program Assistant works with the Associate Chair
and Undergraduate Coordinator in arranging schedules, orchestrating registration,
and a variety of tasks related to the academic program.
• The Secretary to the Chair and Associate Chair works directly with
the Chair on departmental business.
• The Graduate Program Assistant administers the Graduate
Office. For graduate students, Kathleen Clay – the Graduate Program Assistant – is
your primary contact for queries and paperwork.
• The Department of History main office (025 Keene-Flint) is open from
8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
