The pages in this section deal with the Graduate
Program’s academic
rules and regulations. You will find explanations of the Department’s
various graduate programs as well as a guide to the different examinations.
Returning students and faculty will recognize that this material used to be in the annual Orientation Handbook. We have now separated true “orientation” materials from the nuts-and-bolts discussions of our rules.
In addition to the material found here, students
(and faculty) should consult the separate documents linked to the
Resources page.
That page includes short guides to the Departmental Minor Field, the Supervisory
Committees, and the steps to becoming ABD. You
will also find various useful forms there.

Fields of Study
All doctoral students work within a major field of
study, taking coursework and preparing for examinations within that field.
In addition to the overarching curricular rules which apply to all doctoral
students, most sections have their own rules and guidelines. The
pages linked below explain the specific rules passed by each section.

Minor Fields of Study
All doctoral students must complete a Departmental Minor Field. During the Qualifying Examinations students are examined on both their major and minor fields. The History Department allows students to tailor Minor Fields to their own particular interests, but many students will opt to work within a particular geographic section or within an established minor field. The pages below summarize these options.
